This course introduces students to the fundamental elements of writing, essay writing and business writing for success in post-secondary and Early Childhood Education environments. Fundamental English writing concepts are taught at a secondary level.

This course focuses on the study of the physical, cognitive, social and emotional development of children from conception to age five. Major theorists and their contributions to our understanding of child development are introduced, along with some common methods of study and research. Students are expected to develop skill in the careful and accurate observation of children, and in the application of the theory of child development.

The development of preventative and intervention strategies will enable both children and adults to set, manage and meet appropriate behaviour expectations for healthy development.

Creating play environments that meet the needs of infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school age children will be a major focus. Students will prepare, implement and evaluate play experiences. The role of adults as facilitators of play will be emphasized.

Curriculum design, short term and long term planning based on children’s interests and choices with be developed, carried out and evaluated.

The nature, development and value of literature in Early Learning and Child Care programs is examined. Literacy development through play based methodology is stressed. Students have the opportunity to develop skills in presenting and creating curriculum and materials that support literacy development in children.

This course begins with a review of typical physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development of children ages five through twelve years. Investigation of the education and care of children with special needs from birth through school age is a major focus of this course. An overview of types of developmental differences, exploration of the concepts of inclusion, and planning for inclusive early childhood programs provides information supporting an inclusive approach to working with children who have exceptionalities.

Students will examine the basics of proper health practices, fundamentals of good nutrition, and the identification of safety and health components required in a centre for young children. Professional roles, responsibilities and ethics are explored. Issues in and identification of “quality” within a variety of ECE settings are reviewed to support Early Chilhood Educators to establish and maintain high quality child care programs.
